Are you a new Hinge user trying to understand how the Hinge platform works? You might have heard of the X button and the remove option and you thought they probably do the same thing.

Well, they’re basically two features with totally different functions. In this article, you’ll find out what these two features are used for. Why not sip a cup of coffee and keep reading to find out?

Hinge X vs remove: Overview

If you’re just starting out to use Hinge, you’d notice that it certainly doesn’t use the conventional features of other popular dating apps such as Tinder, which new users can easily understand.

Rather, it provides slightly different features with different functions, which can be confusing to new users and could cause them to start asking different questions.

Among these features are the Hinge X and remove. What are they used for? Keep on reading to find out.

What is the difference between X and remove on Hinge?

The X button is used for disliking a user’s profile and moving to the next one. While the Remove button is used to block a user on the platform.

As you may know, Hinge follows the likes of several established dating apps to operate on a swiping system, where users either swipe left or right on a profile they come accross.

Traditionally, swiping right means you like simply means you like such profile. On the other hand, a left swipe shows to Hinge algorithm that you’re not interested in such profiles.

However, on Hinge, the case is a little bit different.

Inasmuch as Hinge operates a swiping like system, it goes to further to add a button like feature in the stead of swiping.

This is what is known as X and like button on hinge.

The X button is used for disliking a user’s profile and moving to the next one.

Hinge provides a heart symbol that you can click to like a profile. However, the app doesn’t provide a dislike button.

Hence, the X button serves as the dislike button on Hinge. Whenever you use this button, you’re allowed to undo that action within a certain period, after which you won’t see the profile again, until you search for it.

In contrast, the Remove option is used to block a user from your matched list. When this option is used on a profile, you won’t be allowed to see that person again. So, you can think of this Remove option as Facebook’s “block” option, meanwhile, you can’t unblock on Hinge — the remove action is permanent.

Why would you want to use X or remove on a Hinge user?

More often than not, you may want to skip a  profile and go to the next one if that user is not someone you like, or the user’s profile is not appealing to you. Hence, you’ll use the X button since that is what it is meant for.

Meanwhile, as for the Remove option, a few different things can be the reason why you’d want to use it. For example, you may notice that a user seems to be too disturbing and annoying. In that case, you may want to use this option to save yourself from stress and unnecessary arguments as the case may be.

How do you X or remove someone on Hinge?

Here’s how to skip profiles using the X button:

  • Open the app and click on the button with an “H” icon at the bottom-left area of the dashboard to start seeing different profiles.
  • You can like the profiles that look appealing to you by tapping the “heart” icon below the profile picture. However, when you see a profile you don’t want to like, you can click on the X button located in the bottom-left area of the screen. This will close that profile and show you another profile.

Here’s how you can use the Remove option:

  • Log in and navigate to your matched list on Hinge
  • Search for the person you want to permanently remove and open the person’s profile when you find him.
  • You should see a three-dots icon at the top-right of the page, on the user’s profile page,— click on it. That will open a menu with some options. Select the “Remove” option.
  • Next, a page loads asking you the reason why you want to remove that user from your matched list. Select the appropriate reason.
  • If all goes well, you should see a small X which means successful removal of that user from your account.

And that’s all about using X and Remove on Hinge — yeah, it’s that easy. However, you should use the Remove option carefully. Remember that once you remove the account, it cannot be undone.

Is there any disadvantage to using the X button or Remove option on a user?

Well, I’d say there’s really no disadvantage to using any of them. However, you should understand that whenever you use the Remove option on a person’s profile, you won’t see that account again and there’s nothing you can do on your account to see it again. I don’t know whether you’d think of that as a disadvantage. But the only way you can see it again is when you or the person create a new account.

In the case of the X button, you have nothing to worry about. Meanwhile, if you don’t click on undo as soon as you find out you’ve mistakenly pressed the X button, you’ll likely not see that profile again. That is not to say you won’t find the profile if you search for it.

Does Hinge notify people when I use X or the remove option on their profile?

No. Hinge does not notify other users that you used the X or Remove option on their profiles. Even though the app is primarily for dating, they still ensure privacy for its users. They probably understood that notifying users about such an action is an infringement of privacy. Therefore, they resorted to not notifying people.

Conclusion

The X button and the remove feature are two different functions that some people tend to find confusing and just believe that they are the same. However, they’re not the same as they were both included in the app to perform totally different functions.

In this article on Hinge X vs remove, we’ve what these two features do and when they can be used. So, by reading through this article, you should no longer have any doubt about what the remove option and X button do on Hinge.
